* The best defense for your home is to have a someone occupying the house. A house where someone is staying is always safer than an empty house. Try to arrange for a friend or relative to stay at home at least during the nights while you go on vacation.
* Halt your mail and newspaper while you are on vacation. Mail spilling out of the mailbox is a sure sign that your house is empty.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road have them maintained by someone. Or Else move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Untended and wilted plants tell passersby that the home is empty.
* Use timers for tv and lights. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. Living room lights should come on at sundown. Afterwards turn off the living room lights and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and you keep it on till you turn in set the timer accordingly. The lights may be on but the lack of the tv's bluish glow can indicate that the house is empty.
* Request a neighbor to come in to your apartment on a regular basis. Windows being opened and closed etc is evidence that the house is not empty.
* If you rent the apartment or house tell the landlord that you will be out of station. The owner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have a home security system installed make certain that the housesitter is aware of just how to use it.
* See to it that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be well aware of who should be informed should a problem crop up.
