* Discontinue your newspaper and mail delivery when you go on vacation. Unread newspaper and mail publicises that the house is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants or a garden arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or remove the potted plants away from sight. Untended and dying plants convey that the house is uninhabited.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Timers should run lights in several rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. When you normally hit the sack set the timer to switch off living room lights and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and you watch it till 11 pm set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights are on the absence of the tv can indicate that no one is really home.
* Get a neighbor to visit your home frequently. Windows and curtains being opened and closed denote that the house is not empty.
* If you stay at a rented home notify the landlord that the home will be unoccupied. The landlord may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have an alarm installed see to it that the home sitter recognizes how to make it run.
* Ensure that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person watching over the house should be informed about exactly who to call if any issue should come up.
