Is your home going to be empty for a longish time while you take a much needed break away from town? That is when it usually is open to looters. Here is what to do to make your home safer.
* The best solution is to arrange for a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is very likely safer than an unoccupied home. Try to get a relative or friend to live at your house for the time you are traveling.
* Stop your mail and newspaper while you are away from home. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around tells potential burglars that no one is home.
* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible have them maintained by someone. Otherwise shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants not being cared for are a sign that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Around your normal sleeptime put out the lights in your living room and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and keep it on till 10 the timer should do the same thing. Though the lights may be on the lack of the tv's bluish glow may lead to suspiscion that the apartment or home is empty.
* Ask a neighbor to come in to your place often. Windows being opened and closed etc convey that the home is inhabited.
* If you rent an apartment you may want to let your landlord know that the house will be empty. The owner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you use a security system make certain that the homesitter recognises just how to use it.
* Make sure the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person checking on the house must know who is to be informed if there is a problem.
