Is your house going to be unoccupied for several days while you go on a holiday? That is the time it is most susceptible to being burglarized. Here is what you can do to deal with it.
* The best defense for your home is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone in is usually safer than an empty apartment. Try arranging for a relative or friend to remain at your home for the time you are away.
* Halt the newspaper delivery and mail delivery when the house is empty. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up publicises that the home is empty.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside have them watered by someone. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept out of sight. Dying plants tell potential burglars that the home or apartment is unoccupied.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. The timings for lights should look natural. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. When it is time for bed the living room should have lights off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and have it on till midnight or so the timer must follow those timings. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of light from the tv can give a clue that the apartment or home is empty.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop into your place often. Curtains and windows being opened denote that the house is not empty.
* If you stay at a rented home it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that the apartment will be empty. Your landlord may want to check on it.
* If you use any kind of security system make sure the person who is house sitting is familiar with exactly how to use it.
* Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. The person checking up on the apartment should be aware of who should be informed should a problem crop up.
