* The best security for your apartment is to arrange for a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is almost always safer than an uninhabited home. Check if you can get a friend to live at your house when you are away.
* Halt your mail delivery and newspaper delivery when you go away. Mail and newspapers lying around informs potential thieves that your house is empty.
* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise keep the potted plants of of sight. Uncared for plants show that no one is home now.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Subsequently the lights in your living room should be switched off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and have it on till midnight or so have the timer set accordingly. The lights may be on but the tv being off may indicate to outsiders that the home is empty.
* See if a neighbor will come in to your home frequently. Windows and curtains being opened and closed convey that the house is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented house it may be useful to tell the landlord that you are going out of town. Your houseowner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.
* If you have an alarm system installed make sure the house sitter is comfortable with how it is to be run.
* Make it a point to see that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should be informed about who they should call if there is a problem.
