Is your apartment to be left empty for a few days while you go out of town? That is when it is most susceptible to break ins. Here is what to do to make your home safer.
* The most effective defense is to have someone stay at your apartment. A house where someone is staying is very likely safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Try getting a relative to live at your house when you are away.
* Discontinue your mail delivery and newspaper delivery when you go on vacation. Mail and newspapers lying around lets everyone know that the house is empty.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside get someone to come in and water them. Or move the potted plants out of sight. Wilted plants tell potential burglars that the home is empty.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. Subsequently put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in set the timer accordingly. Even with lights switched on the tv being turned off might be sufficient evidence that no one is really home.
* See if a neighbor will drop in to your apartment or home often. Windows and curtains being opened and closed indicate that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment it may be useful to tell the landlord that you will be away. The homeowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have installed a burglar alarm make sure the person who is house sitting knows exactly how to run it.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is checking on the home must be aware of who they should notify should a problem arise.
