The story about video surveillance privacy law

Is your home or apartment to be empty for days or weeks while you travel? That is when it is susceptible to thieves breaking in. Here are several specific things you might want to do.

* The best way to defend your apartment is to get someone staying at home. Having someone stay at your home is always safer than a deserted home. Try to arrange for a trustworthy friend to hang out at your home for the time you are away.

* Discontinue the mail and newspaper when you travel out of town. A mailbox filled to the brim calls attention to the fact that the home is unoccupied.

* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible have them maintained by someone. Alternatively shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants dying slowly inform housebreakers that the home is empty.

* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use light timers in more than one room. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. When it is time for bed living room should turn dark and the bedroom lights should be turned on.

If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and have it on till midnight or so set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights may be on the tv being off may lead someone to suspect that the apartment or home is empty.

* See if a neighbor can drop in and check on your apartment now and then. Windows being open now and then signals that the house is inhabited.

* If you live in a rented home you may want to notify your landlord that the apartment or home will be empty. The houseowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.

* If you have a security system installed make sure the housesitter knows how it is to be worked.

* See that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person checking on the house should be aware of exactly who to call should a problem crop up.
