Is your apartment to be left empty for several days while you go vacationing? That is the time it is open to burglaries. Here are several things you can do to deal with it.
* The top way to secure your home is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone at home is very likely safer than an unoccupied home. Make arrangements for a friend or someone you trust to live at your apartment while you go on vacation.
* Discontinue your mail and newspaper when you leave the home unoccupied. Unread newspaper and mail informs potential thieves that the home is empty.
* If you have potted plants that are visible arrange for them to be kept well. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Uncared for plants are a sign that the house is empty.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use timers on lights in several rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. At your regular bedtime set the timer to switch off living room lights and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and it is always on till you go to bed set your timer to that schedule. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv's light shining through can clue in someone that the house is uninhabited.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in and check on your apartment now and then. Windows being opened and closed etc denote that the house is not empty.
* If you stay in a rented apartment notify the landlord that the apartment will be empty. The owner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you use a perimeter protection or other security system make it a point to see that the apartment sitter is comfortable with precisely how to operate it.
* Make certain that the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should be informed about who they should notify if there is a problem.
