Learn more about video surveillance home security sign

Is your house to be left unoccupied for some days or weeks while you holiday? That is when the home usually is most vulnerable to burglaries and housebreaks. Here are several things you can do.

* The best security for your apartment is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone stay at your home is commonly safer than an unoccupied apartment. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to live at your house for the time you are away.

* Temporarily stop newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you go away. A mailbox filled to the brim tells potential burglars that nobody is home.

* If you potted plants visibly placed ask someone to maintain them. Or remove the potted plants away from sight. Plants not being taken care of show that the home is untenanted.

* Use timers for tv and lights. Use light timers in more than one room. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally retire living room should turn dark and switch on the bedroom lights.

If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and keep in on till 11 pm the timer should stick to those times too. The lights may be on but the absence of the tv glow may reveal that no one is actually home.

* See if a neighbor can drop in on your house frequently. Windows being open now and then gives evidence that somebody is home.

* If you live in a rented apartment maybe you can tell the landlord that the apartment will be empty. The houseowner may want to keep tabs on the home.

* If you have installed an alarm system see to it that the house sitter is aware of precisely how to use it.

* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person watching over the house should be aware of who they should contact should any issue crop up.
