* The best deterrant is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone at home is always safer than an empty apartment. Arrange for a relative to live at your apartment when you are traveling.
* Temporarily stop mail delivery and newspaper delivery for the entire time you are away. Piles of newspaper lying around calls attention to the fact that nobody is home.

* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. At your regular sleeptime the lights in your living room should be switched off and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and you keep it on till you turn in have your timer do the same. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of light from the tv might be sufficient evidence that the home is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor will visit your home frequently. Windows being open now and then signals that the house is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented apartment perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that the home will be unoccupied. The landlord may want to check up on it regularly.
* If you have installed an alarm of protection system see to it that the person who is house sitting is comfortable with how it is to be operated.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. The person checking on the house must know exactly who to call should a problem crop up.
