Is your home going to be empty for sometime while you take a vacation? That is when your home is open to burglaries. Here are several things you can do to make your home less vulnerable.
* The best way to defend your apartment is to get a home sitter. Having someone stay at your home is normally safer than a home that is not occupied. See if you can get a friend or relative to remain at your home while you are away.
* Discontinue the newspaper and mail delivery when the house is empty. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up announces that no one is home.
* If you have potted plants or a garden have them watered by someone. Or Else move the potted plants out of sight. Untended and dying plants show that nobody is home.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. The timings for lights should look natural. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Around the time your retire the living room lights should be turned off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and you watch it till 11 pm set the timer accordingly. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv may indicate to outsiders that the house is empty.
* See if a neighbor will come in to your home on a regular basis. Windows and curtains being opened are all signs that the home is inhabited.
* If you rent a home let the owner know that the house will be empty. The owner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you use an alarm system ensure that the homesitter is aware of precisely how to work it.
* Make sure the house sitter can reach you easily. The person watching over the house should be informed about who they should fill in if there is a problem.
