Is your house going to be empty for more than a day or two while you take a much needed break away from town? That is when it tends to be open to burglaries and housebreaks. Here is a bunch of things you can do about it.

* The best way out is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone stay at home is commonly safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Try arranging for a trusted friend or relative to hang out at your apartment while you are away.

* Stop your mail and newspaper delivery for the entire time you are away. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper tells potential burglars that no one is home.

* If you have potted plants visible from outside get someone to water them. Alternatively shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Wilted and dying plants are an indication that the house is empty.

* Use timers for tv and lights. Timers should run lights in several rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. At the time you go to bed the living room lights should be turned off and the bedroom lights should switch on.

If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and you watch it till 11 pm set your timer to that schedule. Even with lights switched on the lack of the tv's bluish glow can clue in someone that no one is really home.

* Get a neighbor to drop in and check on your home on a regular basis. Doors and windows being worked gives evidence that the house is not empty.

* If you rent a home or apartment it may be useful to tell the landlord that you are traveling. The houseowner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.

* If you have an alarm or protection system installed make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting is aware of how to make it run.

* Ensure that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is checking on the home should be informed about who they should contact should a problem crop up.
