Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for some days or weeks while you go vacationing? That is when your home tends to be most vulnerable to looters breaking in. Here is a bunch of things to do to defend your home.
* The best security for your apartment is to have a house sitter. Having someone in is almost always safer than an empty apartment. Try to get a relative or friend to live at your house when you are away.
* Stop the newspaper delivery and mail delivery while you are on vacation. An overflowing mailbox tells unlawful elements that the house is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Wilted plants show that no one is home now.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. At sunset turn on the living room lights. Afterwards turn off the living room lights and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and it is always on till you go to bed set the timer accordingly. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv's light shining through can give away that this is an empty house.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in and check on your home frequently. Windows being opened and closed etc denote that the home is inhabited.
* If you stay at a rented home it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that the apartment will be empty. The owner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.
* If you have installed a burglar alarm make it a point to see that the house sitter knows precisely how to work it.
* Ensure that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must be well aware of who is to be informed should any issue crop up.
