Is your apartment to be unoccupied for more than a day or two while you and your family vacation out of town? That is when your home tends to be vulnerable to burglaries and housebreaks. Here are several specific things you should consider doing.
* The better alternative is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone in is usually safer than a house that is empty. Try arranging for a friend to live at your house while you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue mail and newspaper when the house is empty. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper lets passersby know that the home is deserted.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden ask someone to maintain them. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Plants wilting from lack of water tell the observer that the home is untenanted.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use timers on lights in several rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Subsequently at bedtime the lights in your living room should be switched off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and you keep it on till you turn in set your timer to that schedule. The living room light may be on but the absence of the bluish tv glow may lead someone to suspect that this house is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor can come in to your home regularly while you are away. Windows and curtains being opened and closed is evidence that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment you might notify the owner that the house will be unoccupied. The homeowner may want to watch over the house.
* If you use a home security system see that the home sitter knows exactly how to operate it.
* Make it a point to see that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is checking on the home must be well aware of who they should intimate should a problem arise.
