Home: Thumbprint Security Systems
Fact sheet on thumbprint security systemsIs your house to be left unoccupied for many days while you go on tour? That is when it usually is susceptible to burglaries. Here is what to help make your home safer. * The best defense for your home is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone at home is always safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Try to arrange for a relative or friend to stay at home at least during the nights while you travel. * Discontinue the newspaper and mail delivery for the entire time you are away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox is a sure sign that the home is empty. * If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road get someone to water them. Alternatively shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Wilted and dying plants convey that the apartment is unoccupied. * Put lights and tv on timers. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The living room lights should come on at sundown. Later on the living room lights should be put out and switch on the bedroom lights. If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and it stays on till bed time the timer must follow those timings. The lights may be on but the absence of the tv's light shining through can give a clue that the home is empty. * Arrange for a neighbor to drop into your place often. Windows being opened and closed etc are signs that the home is occupied. * If you stay in a rented apartment it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are going out of town. Your homeowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment. * If you have a burglar alarm installed see that the apartment sitter is comfortable with how to work it. * Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. The person watching over the house must know who is to be informed should a problem arise.
