* The top way to secure your home is to get a home sitter. A house where someone is staying is almost always safer than a house that is empty. Make arrangements for a relative or a friend to stay at your house when you are away.
* Stop the mail delivery and newspaper delivery when you go on vacation. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up is a sign that your house is empty.

If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and you watch it till 11 pm the timer must follow those timings. The living room light may be on but the lack of light from the tv might be enough evidence that your house is empty.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop into your apartment on a regular basis. Doors and windows being opened are indications that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you live in a rented home perhaps you can tell your landlord that you are going out of town. The houseowner may want to watch over the house.
* If you have installed a home security system ensure that the apartment sitter recognises how it is to be used.
* See that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person checking on the house must know who to call should a problem crop up.
