* The best solution is to have a house sitter. Having someone in is very likely safer than an unoccupied apartment. Try getting a trustworthy friend to stay at home at least during the nights while you are go away.
* Halt your newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you go on vacation. Piles of newspaper lying around advertises that the home is unoccupied.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road arrange for them to be kept well. Alternatively move the potted plants out of sight. Plants not being taken care of give away that the home is empty.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The timings for lights should look natural. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. When you normally hit the sack the lights in the living room should turn off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and it remains on till 11 pm the timer should stick to those times too. Though the lights may be on the absence of the tv glow can clue in someone that the home is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor will visit your apartment or home often. Windows and curtains being worked convey that the home is occupied.
* If you live in a rented apartment it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that you are going away for a few days. Your houseowner may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have an active alarm system see that the home sitter knows just how to work it.
* Make sure the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is watching over the home should know who should be informed should any issues come up.
