Is your home or apartment to be empty for days or weeks while you go on vacation? That is when your home tends to be most vulnerable to housebreaks. Here is a bunch of things to stop break ins.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a sitter at home. An apartment where someone is staying is usually safer than an uninhabited apartment. See if you can get a friend or relative to remain at your apartment while you travel.
* Temporarily halt mail delivery and newspaper delivery when the house is empty. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper tells unlawful elements that the house is empty.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside ensure that someone waters them. Otherwise shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Untended and dying plants show that the house is empty.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should run lights in several rooms. The timings for lights should look natural. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. Later put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it remains on till 11 pm have your timer do the same. The living room light may be on but the lack of light from the tv might indicate that no one is really home.
* Request a neighbor to come in and check out your house regularly. Windows being open now and then indicate that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment notify the owner that the house will be empty. The owner may want to check up on it regularly.
* If you have an alarm installed make certain that the the person who is doing the house sitting knows precisely how to work it.
* Make sure the house sitter can reach you easily. The person responsbile for checking into the house must know who is to be informed should any issues come up.
