* The most effective defense is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at your home is always safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Try to arrange for a relative or a friend to live at your house when you are traveling.

* If you rent a home or apartment notify the landlord that you will be out of station. Your landlord may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have installed a security system see to it that the home sitter recognises how it is to be used.
* See that the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home should know exactly who to call if there is a problem.
