Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for several days while you leave town? That is when the house is vulnerable to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several specific things you can do.

* The better alternative is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone in is almost always safer than a deserted home. Try getting a friend to stay at home while you go on vacation.

* Temporarily stop newspaper and mail delivery when you leave the home unoccupied. Unread newspaper and mail announces that the home is empty.

* If you potted plants visibly placed get someone to water them. Or keep the potted plants of of sight. Untended and wilted plants tell potential burglars that the house is uninhabited.



* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Use light timers in more than one room. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. At bedtime the living room lights should be put out and switch on the bedroom lights.

If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and keep it on till 10 the timer should stick to those times too. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the bluish tv glow might indicate that this house is unoccupied.

* Get a neighbor to come in and check out your apartment now and then. Windows being opened and curtains being worked are all signs that the home is occupied.

* If you rent the home tell the landlord that the home will be unoccupied. Your houseowner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.

* If you have an active alarm system ensure that the the person who is doing the house sitting is familiar with precisely how to operate it.

* See that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person checking on the house should be aware of who they should notify if any issue should come up.
