* The best security for your apartment is to get a home sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is almost always safer than an unoccupied apartment. See if you can get a trusted friend or relative to remain at your apartment while you travel.
* Stop your newspaper and mail delivery when you go on vacation. A mailbox filled to the brim tells unlawful elements that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have a garden or potted plants have them maintained by someone. Or move the potted plants out of sight. Wilted and dying plants give away that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. Living room lights should come on at sundown. At your regular bedtime the living room lights should be put out and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and it is always on till you go to bed have your timer do the same. Even if the lights are on the absence of light from the tv might be sufficient evidence that no one is really home.
* Request a neighbor to visit your house regularly. Curtains and windows being opened convey that the home is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment tell the owner that the house will be empty. The landlord may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.
* If you have a security system installed make it a point to see that the home sitter knows how it is to be operated.
* See to it that the house sitter knows how to contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be well aware of who they should notify should a problem arise.
