* Put lights and tv on timers. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. Living room lights should come on at sundown. Subsequently the living room should have lights off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv might give away that the home is empty.
* Get a neighbor to drop in on your house frequently. Doors and windows being opened signals that the home is inhabited.
* If you live on rent you might notify the owner that the home will be unoccupied. The owner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed make certain that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognizes how to handle it.
* Ensure that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should be aware of who should be informed should a problem crop up.
