Is your house going to be unoccupied for some days or weeks while you go out of town? That is when it usually is susceptible to burglaries. Here is a bunch of things to do.
* The best security for your apartment is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone at home is normally safer than an uninhabited home. Try to get a relative or a friend to stay at home at least during the nights for the time you are away.

* Timers on lights and tv will help. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. At dusk turn on the living room lights. Later on turn off the living room lights and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and you watch it till 11 pm have the timer set accordingly. The living room light may be on but the lack of light from the tv may lead someone to suspect that the house is uninhabited.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to visit your home regularly while you are away. Windows being open now and then signals that the house is inhabited.
* If you stay at a rented home notify the owner that you are going out of town. The homeowner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make it a point to see that the home sitter is aware of how to work it.
* Make sure the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is watching over the home must be well aware of who to call should any issues come up.
