Is your house going to be empty for even a few days while you take a much needed break away from town? That is the time your apartment or home is most susceptible to thieves breaking in. Here is what to do.
* The best deterrant is to have a house sitter. Having someone in is commonly safer than an unoccupied home. Make arrangements for a relative or friend to hang out at your apartment while you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper and mail when you go away. A mailbox filled to the brim lets passersby know that nobody is home.
* If you have potted plants that are visible have them kept by someone regularly. Or Else keep the potted plants of of sight. Untended and dying plants tell potential burglars that the home or apartment is unoccupied.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. When you go to bed the living room lights should be put out and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and it remains on till 11 pm have your timer do the same. The lights may be on but the absence of the tv's bluish glow can give away that the home is unoccupied.
* Ask a neighbor to visit your place often. Windows and curtains being opened are signs that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you rent the apartment or house perhaps you can tell your landlord that you will be out of station. Your houseowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have an alarm installed ensure that the home sitter is familiar with exactly how to use it.
* Make certain that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is checking on the home must be aware of who they should intimate should any issue crop up.
