Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for even a few days while you go on vacation? That is when your home tends to be susceptible to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several things you can do to deal with it.
* The best defense for your home is to get a home sitter. Having someone in is normally safer than a home that is not occupied. Try to get a relative to live at your apartment when you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper delivery and mail delivery while you are away. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox calls attention to the fact that nobody is home.
* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible have them watered by someone. Or Else move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Wilted and dying plants are an indication that no one is home now.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk turn on the living room lights. At bedtime put out the lights in your living room and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and it is always on till you go to bed the timer should do the same thing. Though the lights are on the tv being off may lead to suspiscion that the apartment or home is empty.
* See if a neighbor can drop into your apartment or home often. Windows and curtains being opened are signs that the house is not empty.
* If you rent a home let the owner know that the house will be unoccupied. The landlord may want to check up on it regularly.
* If you use any kind of security system make it a point to see that the housesitter recognizes just how to use it.
* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person checking up on the apartment must be well aware of who they should call should there be a problem.
