Is your apartment to be left empty for many days while you go vacationing? That is the time your apartment or home is most vulnerable to burglaries and housebreaks. Here are several things you can do to make your home less vulnerable.
* The best solution is to have a house sitter. Having someone at home is very likely safer than a house that is empty. Try to arrange for a relative or friend to live at your house when you are away.
* Stop your newspaper and mail delivery while you are away from home. Unread newspaper and mail tells everyone that the home is deserted.
* If you have potted plants that are visible arrange for them to be kept well. Or Else move the potted plants out of sight. Plants wilting from lack of water suggest that the home is untenanted.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. Subsequently turn off the living room lights and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and you watch it till 11 pm the timer should stick to those times too. The living room light may be on but the absence of the tv's bluish glow can clue in someone that no one is actually home.
* Get a neighbor to drop in on your apartment on a regular basis. Doors being opened and closed and windows too gives evidence that the home is occupied.
* If you live in a rented home perhaps you can tell your landlord that you are going out of town. The homeowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have installed an alarm system make it a point to see that the apartment sitter knows precisely how to operate it.
* See to it that the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is watching over the home must be aware of who to call should any issues come up.
