Understanding security cameras

Is your house going to be empty for days or weeks while you take a vacation? That is when it tends to be susceptible to burglars breaking in. Here are several specific things you can do to make your home less vulnerable.

* The most effective solution is to get a home sitter. A house where someone is staying is normally safer than an uninhabited apartment. Make arrangements for a relative or a friend to live at your house when you are away.

* Stop the newspaper and mail delivery when you travel out of town. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper lets passersby know that your house is empty.

* If you potted plants visibly placed arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Untended and dying plants are an indication that no one is home.

* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Put lights in several rooms on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally retire the living room lights should go off and switch on the bedroom lights.

If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in the timer must follow those timings. Even with lights switched on the absence of the bluish tv glow might be enough evidence that the home is unoccupied.

* See if a neighbor can come in to your apartment on a regular basis. Doors and windows being opened are indications that the home is occupied.

* If you stay in a rented house it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are traveling. The landlord may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.

* If you use a security system make it a point to see that the person who is house sitting knows how to operate it.

* Make sure the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person checking up on the apartment should be informed about who is to be informed should a problem arise.
