The story of security cameras in high schools

Is your house to be left unoccupied for days or weeks while you travel on vacation? That is when your home is susceptible to burglaries and housebreaks. Here is what you can do about it.

* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to arrange for a house sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is very likely safer than an unoccupied home. Check if you can get a friend to stay at home for the time you are traveling.

* Stop your newspaper and mail delivery for the entire time you are away. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up lets everyone know that your house is unoccupied.

* If you have a garden or potted plants get someone to come in and water them. Alternatively keep the potted plants of of sight. Wilted plants tell passersby that the house is not occupied.

* Put lights and tv on timers. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. Later the living room lights should go off and the bedroom lights should be turned on.

If you turn tv on at 7 most days and keep it on till 10 set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights are on the lack of the tv's bluish glow may reveal that this is an empty house.

* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in and check out your house regularly. Windows being opened and closed etc is evidence that the house is not empty.

* If you rent the apartment perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that the apartment will be empty. The landlord may want to check on the home now and then.

* If you have installed a burglar alarm make it a point to see that the person who is house sitting knows how to operate it.

* Make certain that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be aware of who should be informed if any issue should come up.
