Is your apartment or home to be empty for a few days while you holiday? That is when it is most susceptible to looters. Here is what you might want to do.
* The better alternative is to have someone stay at your apartment. An apartment where someone is staying is very likely safer than an unoccupied apartment. Arrange for a trusted friend or relative to live at your apartment when you are away.
* Temporarily stop newspaper and mail delivery when you go on vacation. An overflowing mailbox announces that your house is empty.

* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Around your normal sleeptime set the timer to switch off living room lights and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and keep it on till 10 the timer should stick to those times too. The lights may be on but the lack of light from the tv may lead someone to suspect that no one is home.
* See if a neighbor will drop in to your home on a regular basis. Doors being opened and closed and windows too points out that somebody is home.
* If you live in a rented home maybe you can tell the landlord that you are going on vacation. Your homeowner may want to keep tabs on the home.
* If you have a home security system installed ensure that the house sitter recognises just how to work it.
* Make it a point to see that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is watching over the home should know who is to be informed should there be a problem.
