Is your house going to be unoccupied for many days while you go on a holiday? That is the time your apartment or home is vulnerable to looters. Here is what you should consider doing.
* The best defense for your home is to get a home sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is always safer than a deserted home. See if you can get a trustworthy friend to stay at home for the time you are traveling.
* Stop the mail and newspaper delivery when you travel out of town. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox publicises that the house is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible have them maintained by someone. Otherwise move the potted plants away from sight. Plants not being cared for convey that no one is home now.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. The living room lights should come on at sundown. Around the time your retire set the timer to switch off living room lights and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it remains on till 11 pm have the timer set accordingly. Even if the lights are on the absence of the bluish tv glow may reveal that this house is unoccupied.
* Get a neighbor to drop in and check on your home on a regular basis. Curtains and windows being opened are indications that the home is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented apartment you might let the landlord know that the house will be empty. Your landlord may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have an alarm system installed make sure the apartment sitter recognises how to run it.
* Make it a point to see that the neighbor can reach you easily. The person checking on the house must be well aware of who they should contact if there is a problem.
