Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for days or weeks while you leave town? That is when your home is open to break ins. Here is a bunch of things to stop break ins.
* The best security for your apartment is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone at home is usually safer than a house that is empty. Try to get a relative to remain at your home while you are away.
* Temporarily stop newspaper and mail delivery while you are away. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around is a sure sign that the home is deserted.
* If you keep a garden ask someone to maintain them. Or remove the potted plants away from sight. Plants wilting slowly are evidence that no one is home now.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Use light timers in more than one room. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. At sunset turn on the living room lights. At the time you go to bed the lights in your living room should be switched off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and you keep it on till you turn in the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights may be on the tv being turned off might give away that no one is home.
* Ask a neighbor to drop in and check on your apartment now and then. Windows and curtains being worked denote that the house is inhabited.
* If you live in a rented home it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that the house will be empty. Your landlord may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have an active alarm system make sure the the person who is doing the house sitting recognizes how to run it.
* Ensure that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. Whoever is checking on the home should be informed about who they should notify if any issue should come up.
