* The most sensible alternative is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at home is usually safer than a home that is not occupied. See if you can get a friend or relative to hang out at your home while you are away.
* Discontinue your newspaper and mail delivery while you are on vacation. Mail and newspapers lying around lets everyone know that no one is home.

* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. Living room lights should come on at sundown. Later on living room should turn dark and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and you watch it till 11 pm set the timer accordingly. Even if the lights are on the absence of light from the tv may indicate to outsiders that the house is empty.
* See if a neighbor will drop into your house frequently. Doors being opened and closed and windows too indicate that the home is inhabited.
* If you live in a rented apartment notify the owner that you will be away. The landlord may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have a security system installed make certain that the house sitter knows how it is to be used.
* See that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person responsbile for checking into the house should know who they should notify should any issue crop up.
