Is your house going to be empty for even a few days while you vacation out of town? That is when your home tends to be susceptible to burglars breaking and entering it. Here is a bunch of things to stop break ins.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a someone occupying the house. A house where someone is staying is almost always safer than an empty house. Try to arrange for a friend or someone you trust to remain at your home when you are traveling.
* Stop your mail and newspaper when you leave the home unoccupied. An overflowing mailbox advertises that the home is deserted.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road ask someone to maintain them. Or Else keep the potted plants of of sight. Plants dying slowly tell potential burglars that no one is home.
* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Timers should run lights in several rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Later on the living room lights should go off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you turn tv on at 7 most days and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in have your timer do the same. Even if the lights are on the tv being off can give a clue that no one is really home.
* See if a neighbor can drop in on your apartment on a regular basis. Windows and curtains being worked denote that somebody is home.
* If you rent a home tell the owner that you will be away. The houseowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you use an alarm system make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting is comfortable with how it is to be operated.
* See that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person checking up on the apartment must be aware of who to call should a problem crop up.
