Is your apartment to be unoccupied for more than a day or two while you go vacationing? That is when it is open to burglars breaking in. Here are several specific things to do to defend your home.
* The better alternative is to arrange for a house sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is very likely safer than an unoccupied home. Check if you can get a friend to stay at your apartment while you are away.
* Temporarily halt mail delivery and newspaper delivery when the house is empty. Unread newspaper and mail lets everyone know that nobody is home.
* If you have a garden or potted plants arrange for them to be kept well. Otherwise shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants not being taken care of are a hint that the house is empty.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Use timers on lights in several rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. Around your normal sleeptime the living room lights should be put out and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it stays on till bed time set the timer accordingly. The living room light may be on but the absence of the tv glow might be enough evidence that your house is empty.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in and check on your home regularly while you are away. Windows being opened and closed etc convey that the house is inhabited.
* If you stay in a rented house let the landlord know that you will be out of station. The houseowner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you have an alarm installed see that the apartment sitter recognizes exactly how to use it.
* See to it that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person checking on the house must know who they should notify should any problems come up.
