Is your home going to be empty for more than a day or two while you go on a holiday? That is when your home tends to be susceptible to burglars breaking and entering it. Here is a bunch of things to do to make your home safer.
* The best way to defend your apartment is to get someone staying at home. Having someone stay at home is usually safer than an uninhabited apartment. See if you can get a trusted friend or relative to hang out at your home when you are away.
* Stop your mail and newspaper while you are away from home. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around tells everyone that the house is empty.
* If you potted plants visibly placed have them kept by someone regularly. Or move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Untended and wilted plants show that the home is untenanted.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Use light timers in more than one room. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. Living room lights should come on at sundown. When you normally go to bed the living room lights should be turned off and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer must follow those timings. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv's light shining through may lead to suspiscion that no one is actually home.
* See if a neighbor can visit your place often. Windows and curtains being worked are signs that the home is occupied.
* If you rent the apartment or house maybe you can tell the landlord that you are traveling. The homeowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have installed a home security system make it a point to see that the housesitter is comfortable with exactly how to run it.
* See to it that the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must be aware of who they should call should a problem arise.
