* The best way out is to arrange for a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is normally safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. See if you can get a relative or a friend to live at your apartment while you travel.

If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and it remains on till 11 pm the timer should do the same thing. The living room light may be on but the lack of light from the tv might be enough evidence that the house is uninhabited.
* Request a neighbor to drop into your house frequently. Windows being open now and then denote that the home is inhabited.
* If you live on rent you might let the landlord know that you are going out of town. Your houseowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you use a security system make sure the house sitter recognises how to run it.
* See that the neighbor can reach you easily. Whoever is checking on the home must know who they should contact should any problems come up.
