* The best deterrant is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone at home is almost always safer than a deserted home. Check if you can get a friend or someone you trust to live at your house for the time you are away.
* Discontinue your newspaper and mail when the house is empty. Mail and newspapers lying around informs potential thieves that your home is empty.
* If you keep a garden ask someone to maintain them. Or move the potted plants away from sight. Wilted and dying plants are an indication that no one is home.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At sunset turn on the living room lights. When you go to bed the living room lights should be put out and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and it remains on till midnight set your timer to that schedule. Even with lights switched on the lack of the tv's bluish glow may indicate to outsiders that the home is empty.
* Get a neighbor to drop in and check on your house regularly. Doors being opened and closed and windows too are signs that the home is occupied.
* If you rent a home or apartment perhaps you can tell your landlord that the apartment or home will be empty. Your landlord may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.
* If you have an alarm system active ensure that the person who is house sitting knows how to work it.
* Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person responsbile for checking into the house should be informed about who to call if any issue should come up.
