* The best defense for your home is to have a house sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is usually safer than an unoccupied apartment. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to remain at your home for the time you are traveling.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper delivery and mail delivery while you are away. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox advertises that no one is home.
* If you potted plants visibly placed get someone to water them. Otherwise move the potted plants out of sight. Plants dying from lack of care give away that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. At bedtime the living room should have lights off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and you watch it till 11 pm have your timer do the same. Even if the lights are on the absence of the tv's bluish glow can indicate that the home is unoccupied.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in to your apartment or home often. Windows being opened and closed etc gives evidence that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you live in a rented apartment you might notify the owner that you are traveling. Your homeowner may want to watch over the house.
* If you have installed an alarm system make certain that the home sitter is comfortable with exactly how to use it.
* See to it that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person checking up on the apartment must be well aware of who is to be informed should a problem arise.
