Knowledgebase on peninsula alarm systemsIs your apartment to be left empty for a few days or weeks while you go vacationing? That is when your apartment is most vulnerable to looters. Here are several things you can do. * The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to get a home sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is usually safer than an uninhabited home. See if you can get a friend or relative to stay at your house for the time you are away. * Temporarily halt mail and newspaper delivery for the entire time you are away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox announces that the house is unoccupied. * If you maintain a garden get someone to maintain them. Or move the potted plants away from sight. Plants wilting slowly tell the observer that the house is uninhabited. * Put lights and tv on timers. Put lights in several rooms on timers. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. At your regular sleeptime the lights in your living room should be switched off and switch on the bedroom lights. If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on till bedtime the timer should stick to those times too. Even with lights switched on the lack of light from the tv can be a sign that the house is empty. * See if a neighbor can drop into your house regularly. Doors and windows being opened convey that the house is not empty. * If you stay in a rented apartment it may be useful to tell the landlord that you will be out of station. The homeowner may want to check on the home now and then. * If you have installed a home security system ensure that the apartment sitter knows exactly how to operate it. * Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must be well aware of who is to be informed should any issue crop up.
