* The most sensible alternative is to have a sitter at home. Having someone stay at home is commonly safer than an uninhabited apartment. Try to arrange for a friend or someone you trust to remain at your apartment while you travel.
* Temporarily stop newspaper and mail delivery when the apartment is empty. An overflowing mailbox informs potential thieves that the home is unoccupied.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road arrange for them to be kept well. Or Else shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Untended and wilted plants are another sign that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Use light timers in more than one room. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The living room lights should come on at sundown. Around your normal sleeptime set the timer to switch off living room lights and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and keep it on till 10 have the timer set accordingly. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv may lead to suspiscion that your house is empty.
* Ask a neighbor to drop in on your apartment now and then. Windows being open now and then is evidence that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you live in a rented home perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that the house will be unoccupied. Your homeowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have installed a security system make certain that the home sitter is aware of how to make it work.
* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person checking on the house should know who they should fill in if there is a problem.
