* The better alternative is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at home is always safer than a house that is empty. Arrange for a friend to hang out at your apartment while you are away.
* Halt the newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you travel out of town. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper lets passersby know that your home is empty.

* Put the lights and tv on timers. Timers should run lights in several rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. Living room lights should come on at sundown. At your regular bedtime the living room lights should be put out and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and keep in on till 11 pm set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of light from the tv can give a clue that the apartment or home is empty.
* See if a neighbor will visit your home now and then. Windows being opened and closed etc are indications that the house is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home let the owner know that you will be away. Your landlord may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have an alarm system installed make it a point to see that the housesitter recognizes precisely how to work it.
* Make sure the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is checking on the home must know exactly who to call should any problems come up.
