Is your house to be left empty for a few days while you go out of station? That is when your home tends to be vulnerable to burglaries and housebreaks. Here are several things you can do to deal with it.
* The better alternative is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone at home is very likely safer than a home that is not occupied. Check if you can get a relative or a friend to live at your apartment when you are away.
* Temporarily stop newspaper and mail delivery when you go on vacation. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox is a sign that the home is deserted.
* If you have a garden or potted plants ensure that someone waters them. Otherwise remove the potted plants away from sight. Plants wilting slowly inform housebreakers that the house is empty.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. At dusk turn on the living room lights. When you normally go to bed the living room lights should go off and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and it stays on till bed time set the timer accordingly. Though the lights are on the lack of the tv's bluish glow may lead to suspiscion that the home is empty.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in to your house frequently. Windows being opened and curtains being worked are indications that the home is occupied.
* If you live in a rented apartment perhaps you can tell your landlord that the house will be empty. The owner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you use a home security system make it a point to see that the house sitter is comfortable with just how to use it.
* See that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person watching over the house should be informed about exactly who to call should any issues come up.
