* The best solution is to get a home sitter. Having someone at home is always safer than an uninhabited apartment. Try getting a friend or someone you trust to remain at your apartment for the time you are traveling.
* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper delivery while you are on vacation. A mailbox filled to the brim is a sign that your house is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden get someone to come in and water them. Alternatively ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Wilted and dying plants imply that the home or apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The timings for lights should look natural. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. At the time you go to bed the lights in the living room should turn off and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and have it on till bedtime set your timer to that schedule. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of light from the tv can give a clue that the apartment or home is empty.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in and check out your apartment or home often. Windows being opened and curtains being worked mean that the house is occupied.
* If you rent a home tell the owner that the home will be unoccupied. Your homeowner may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have an alarm installed make sure the person who is house sitting recognizes exactly how to run it.
* See to it that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is watching over the home should be informed about who to call if any issue should come up.
