* The best defense for your home is to get someone staying at home. Having someone in is commonly safer than an unoccupied home. Make arrangements for a relative to stay at home when you are traveling.
* Stop your mail and newspaper while you are away. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up is a sure sign that the home is deserted.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden ask someone to maintain them. Otherwise move the potted plants away from sight. Dying plants convey that the home is unoccupied.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. Afterwards the living room should have lights off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and you keep it on till you turn in set the timer accordingly. Though the lights may be on the lack of the tv's bluish glow can indicate that no one is actually home.
* See if a neighbor can come in to your home now and then. Windows being open now and then are signs that the house is not empty.
* If you rent an apartment notify the owner that you are traveling. Your landlord may want to check on it.
* If you have installed an alarm of protection system see that the housesitter recognises how it is to be worked.
* Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. The person checking on the house should be aware of who they should intimate should any issue crop up.
