Is your house going to be empty for several days while you take a vacation? That is the time your home is open to housebreaks. Here is a bunch of things to do.
* The best security for your apartment is to have someone stay at your apartment. An apartment where someone is staying is very likely safer than an uninhabited apartment. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to hang out at your apartment for the time you are away.
* Temporarily stop mail delivery and newspaper delivery when you leave the home unoccupied. Piles of newspaper lying around lets everyone know that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have a garden or potted plants arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or Else ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Wilted plants show that the house is uninhabited.
* Use timers to work tv and lights. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Subsequently at bedtime put out the lights in your living room and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv may indicate to outsiders that no one is home.
* See if a neighbor will drop in and check on your home frequently. Windows being opened and closed etc denote that the house is inhabited.
* If you live in a rented apartment it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are going out of town. The owner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have an alarm system installed make sure the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises how to make it run.
* Ensure that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person checking up on the apartment must be well aware of who they should fill in should a problem crop up.
