Is your apartment or home to be empty for some days or weeks while you go on tour? That is the time it is most vulnerable to burglars breaking in. Here is what to help harden your home against burglaries.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone at home is always safer than a house that is empty. See if you can get a friend or someone you trust to stay at home at least during the nights while you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper and mail while you are away from home. An overflowing mailbox calls attention to the fact that your house is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible have them maintained by someone. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept out of sight. Plants not being cared for are another sign that the home is empty.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. Later the lights in your living room should be switched off and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and have it on till midnight or so the timer should stick to those times too. Though the lights are on the tv being off can give away that no one is really home.
* Ask a neighbor to drop in on your place often. Doors being opened and closed and windows too are signs that the house is not empty.
* If you stay in a rented house you might let the landlord know that the apartment will be empty. The landlord may want to keep tabs on the home.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed see to it that the housesitter knows how to run it.
* Ensure that the neighbor knows how to contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must know who they should contact should any problems come up.
