Is your house to be left unoccupied for several days while you and your family vacation out of town? That is the time your apartment or home is most susceptible to looters. Here is what you should consider doing.
* The most effective solution is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone stay at your home is commonly safer than an unoccupied home. Arrange for a friend or someone you trust to live at your house while you are go away.
* Halt the newspaper delivery and mail delivery for the entire time you are away. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox tells potential burglars that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside get someone to come in and water them. Alternatively move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Plants dying slowly are a hint that the home is untenanted.
* Use timers to work tv and lights. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Later on living room should turn dark and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and it remains on till 11 pm the timer should stick to those times too. Though the lights may be on the absence of the tv's light shining through can give away that this is an empty house.
* See if a neighbor will come in to your home now and then. Windows and curtains being opened and closed are all signs that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment maybe you can tell the landlord that the house will be empty. The landlord may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you use a security system see that the housesitter is familiar with how to use it.
* Ensure that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should be aware of exactly who to call should a problem crop up.
