Fact sheet on mini video surveillance cameras

Is your apartment to be left empty for many days while you and your family travel? That is the time it is vulnerable to looters. Here is a bunch of things to do about it.

* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone at home is usually safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Check if you can get a relative or a friend to remain at your home for the time you are traveling.

* Stop the mail delivery and newspaper delivery while you are away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox lets everyone know that your house is empty.

* If you have potted plants passersby can see get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise remove the potted plants away from sight. Untended plants tell the observer that no one is home.

* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk turn on the living room lights. Subsequently at bedtime put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should switch on.

If you usually switch tv on at 8 and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer should do the same thing. The living room light may be on but the absence of light from the tv can be a sign that the house is empty.

* See if a neighbor will drop into your apartment on a regular basis. Windows and curtains being opened points out that the house is inhabited.

* If you live in a rented apartment perhaps you can tell your landlord that you are going away for a few days. Your houseowner may want to check on it.

* If you have an alarm installed make sure the house sitter is familiar with exactly how to run it.

* Make it a point to see that the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is checking on the home should be aware of who to call should there be a problem.
