* The most effective solution is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone stay at your home is commonly safer than a deserted home. Try to get a trustworthy friend to hang out at your home while you are away.
* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper when the house is empty. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper is a sure sign that no one is home.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden have them watered by someone. Alternatively ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Plants not being cared for suggest that the house is empty.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. When you normally hit the sack the lights in your living room should be switched off and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and have it on till midnight or so have the timer set accordingly. The lights may be on but the lack of light from the tv might give away that the house is uninhabited.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop in to your home regularly while you are away. Windows and curtains being worked are signs that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you rent an apartment it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are going out of town. The landlord may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have a security system installed see to it that the home sitter is aware of how to operate it.
* Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is watching over the home must be well aware of who they should fill in if there is a problem.
