Is your house going to be unoccupied for some days or weeks while you take a vacation? That is the time your apartment or home is most susceptible to thieves breaking in. Here are several specific things you can do to make your home less vulnerable.
* The best way to defend your apartment is to have a sitter at home. Having someone at home is normally safer than an unoccupied apartment. Arrange for a friend or someone you trust to stay at home at least during the nights when you are traveling.
* Stop the mail and newspaper delivery when you leave the home unoccupied. A mailbox filled to the brim publicises that the home is deserted.
* If you have a garden or potted plants arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Alternatively ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Untended and dying plants are evidence that the home is unoccupied.
* Use timers for tv and lights. Put lights in several rooms on timers. The timings for lights should look natural. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. At your regular sleeptime the living room lights should be turned off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and have it on till midnight or so the timer should stick to those times too. Even with lights switched on the absence of the bluish tv glow can give a clue that this is an empty house.
* See if a neighbor can come in and check out your apartment or home often. Doors and windows being worked is evidence that the house is occupied.
* If you rent a home you may want to let your landlord know that you are traveling. The houseowner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you have installed a home security system make certain that the apartment sitter is aware of how to work it.
* See that the neighbor can reach you easily. Whoever is watching over the home should know who to call should any issues come up.
